Young Innovators Cyprus 2020: Young Climathon Event

On Friday and Saturday November 27-28 and December 4-5, the partners of the EIT Climate-KIC Network in Cyprus, the Cyprus University of Technology and the Cyprus Energy Agency, held two online climate-innovation competitions, named Young Climathon, giving the opportunity to youth aged 12-18 from all over Cyprus, to propose innovative, sustainable, long-term, and just solutions, to tackle food waste, as well as to manage organic waste (food).

The Young Climathon competition, which aims to identify areas of change and create bottom-up, meaningful, and long-lasting climate solutions for real-life challenges, is the culmination of the EIT Climate-KIC programme Young Innovators, which, like the first, is being implemented for the first time in Cyprus.

Learning from experts and entrepreneurs surrounding the challenge, participants (students from both public and private schools) were invited to work in groups using the Young Innovators’ visual and system-innovation toolbox, to analyze the aspects of the challenge and create a plan to resolve it.

The winners of the Greek-speaking competition were the “PathFinders” [Apostolos Markos High School (Nicosia) & Kolossi Regional High School (Limassol)] and the “Green Hearts” [Mitsi School of Lemythos]. The English-speaking competition was won by the “Enviro-Mentally Stable” [Senior School (Nicosia)] and the “Mythical Dwarves” [Senior School (Nicosia) & Mitsi School Lemythos]. Congratulations to the winners, and all the teams that participated in the #YoungClimathonCY2020. Special thanks to all the sponsors and supporters.
